FERIAS EN IRLANDA (FAIRS IN IRELAND)

Después de tres meses sin escribir nada aquí, aquí estoy. A veces es un poco complicado escribir acerca de algo interesante sin ser aburrida, por esta razón no escribo mucho, porque pienso que no soy particularmente divertida. Bueno, resumiendo lo que he hecho durante estos meses les cuento: Estuve preparando mi página en Facebook, que aunque no es nada espectacular demanda mucho tiempo, y otra gran excusa es que estuve ocupada haciendo los regalitos para mi familia política, que les visitamos en el verano. Pasamos un buen tiempo familiar allí y no hice ninguna manualidad, pero por otro lado hice cosas muy interesantes como trabajar como voluntaria en el Centro de Paz Corrymeela  http://www.corrymeela.org/  y aunque no estuve allí mucho tiempo, tengo que decir que fue una gran experiencia y pienso que están haciendo algo maravilloso allí. También fui voluntaria en una tienda de segunda mano que pertenece a Salvemos los Niños http://www.savethechildren.org/. Esta es otra organización que hace un montón de cosas por los niños alrededor del mundo, y los voluntarios de Norte Irlanda están haciendo un gran trabajo. Estuvimos en lugares muy bonitos e interesantes  como Scullions' Hurls, una fabrica de palos de Hurling(Un deporte Irlandés). Los dueños nos mostraron el proceso de fabricación y tienen allí un pequeño museo historico. sin embargo relacionados con mis intereses, solo estuvimos en uno, en el mercado de domingo de Ballycastle en el norte de Irlanda, porque es el día en que los artesanos locales venden sus productos, hay otro los sábados en Sligo en la Republica de Irlanda, pero a ese no fuimos. Pienso que esto es una gran idea para promover a los artistas y productores locales y que es una pena que en España esto sea algo más exclusivo o que tal vez no estoy muy enterada del asunto.

After three months without writing anything here, here I am. Sometimes it’s a little complicated to write about something interesting and  not get bored. For this reason, I don’t write most of the time because I think I’m not a particularly fun writer. So, summarizing what I have done during these last few months, I will tell you. I was preparing my Facebook page, although that Is not something spectacular that demands a lot of time, and another big excuse is that I was busy making presents for my family in-law as we visited them during the summer. We had a great family time there and I didn’t do any handicrafts, but I was also doing interesting things, like volunteering in the Corrymeela Peace Centre http://www.corrymeela.org/   and although I wasn`t there for much time, I have to say that It was a great experience and I think they are doing something wonderful there. I was a volunteer too in a Save the Children charity shop http://www.savethechildren.org/. This is another organization that does a lot of things for children around the world, and the volunteers in the north of Ireland are doing a great job. We visited very nice and interesting places,like Scullions' Hurls, a hurling stick factory. The owners showed us the construction process, and they have there a little history museum. However, related to my interests, we were only in one, in a special local market in Ballycastle called the Sunday Market, because it is the day that the local crafters sell their products, There is another in Sligo in the west of Ireland, which is on Saturdays,  but we couldn’t visit it. I think it is a good idea to promote all of the local artists and local products, and it is a pity that here in Spain this is something very exclusive, or I am not very informed about it.

 

BORDANDO Y VIAJANDO (EMBROIDERING AND TRAVELING)

Este fin de semana me sorprendió una mujer en el casco Viejo, es de Inglaterra y está viajando. En Bilbao ha estado  alrededor de 2 semanas, esto no tiene nada de particular siendo que Bilbao es una ciudad turística, lo curioso es que ella estaba bordando en la calle, pero no un pequeño bordado como tal vez alguna de nosotras hemos hecho alguna vez. Tenía tres marcos con un pedazo de bordado en cada uno de ellos, uno de ellos era una parte de la capilla sixtina, otro era una copia de una pintura de M.C. Escher y la más grande era de su propia creación,  un paisaje con dragones. Ella vá viajando y donde se encuentre está bordando. Tenía expuestos sus bordados y solo pedía alguna moneda probablemente para comer o para su propio sustento, tenía escrito debajo de los bordados que su trabajo no se vendía. Estaban increíbles no solo por el tamaño, porque no eran pequeñas piezas, la paciencia, las condiciones para trabajar y la dedicación que esta mujer tiene para hacer esto, lo cual hacen que su trabajo sea más interesante y atractivo. Fue una pena que no le preguntara su nombre, aunque en cualquier caso no estaba muy comunicativa. Esto nos demuestra que si queremos hacer algo podemos hacerlo donde quiera que estemos y a cualquier hora.

This weekend I was surprised by a woman in the Casco Viejo. She is from England and is travelling. She has been in Bilbao around two weeks, and it isn’t particularly strange since it is a tourist city. The curious thing is that she was stitching on the street, but not a small stitch piece like perhaps some of us sometimes have made. She had three framed pieces with one nice piece of stitches in each one. One of them was one of the parts of the Sistine chapel, another was a copy of an M.C. Escher picture and the biggest is her own creation, a landscape with dragons. She is travelling and wherever she is, she is stitching. She exhibits her work and asks for few coins, probably for food or her own maintenance. She writes under her stitch work that they aren’t for sale. It was really amazing not only because of their size, because they aren’t small pieces, her patience, the work conditions and the dedication that this girl has for doing it, and these things make her work more interesting and attractive. It was a pity I didn’t ask her name, although in any case she wasn’t very talkative. It shows us that if we want to do something, we can do it wherever we are and in any hour.
